Park - a play of colours year round
An integral part of the project is the fully revitalised park that you can admire every day from the windows of your apartment. The layout of the paths is designed in such a way that you can see the panorama with the Oliwa Archcathedral from everywhere. The park has an area of as much as 5,000 m2 and features, for example, the post-Cistercian ponds and the Oliwa Stream. Around 50 species of plants grow here, and there are 12,000 plantings. A charming patio hidden among the greenery awaits the residents of Opacka. The silence and omnipresent peace invite you to relax outdoors.
The gardening expertise of the Cistercians
The Cistercians, present in the Oliwa area since the 12th century, have been cultivating the land since time immemorial. Over the centuries, they turned the craft of horticulture into an art and, in line with medieval principles, their gardens reflected the perfect harmony and natural cycle of the changing nature. With the start of work on the project at Opacka Street, it was obvious for the investor – Invest Komfort – to create a green complex inspired by history in this severely neglected place. This decision was required not only by the development plan for the area, which envisaged recreating the place in the style of the old gardens, but also by the nature of the entire district, in which the focal point remains one of the most beautiful parks in Poland – Oliwski Park. The goal of the project, carried out by landscape architect Małgorzata Sobótka and her Studio Krajobraz, was to create a park layout that is accessible to everyone, harks back to history and makes use of modern trends of the gardening craft. Plants were selected based on research into documents and old engravings to create the unusual atmosphere of the place during the whole year.
- ‘When examining the Cistercian artwork, the concepts for both the Hortus Conlusus and the play gardens, it became clear that many plants might still be successfully grown on the site. We planted nearly 50 species, including: evergreens, ornamental grasses and perennials, flowering at different times of the year. The most interesting ones include: lungwort, rodgersia, burnet, and eupatorium. Noble species – hydrangea, iris and rose – allude to the religious symbolism of the monks. The bulbous plants in the lawn sections will also be a great decoration. The total number of plantings in the park and on the estate exceeds 12,000. The flora is also going to be enriched by mature chestnut trees, oaks and lime trees’, comments Małgorzata Sobótka.
The park on Opacka Street is a new place in the old Oliwa, which is really worth paying a visit to and permanently adding to the list of places for daily walks and family leisure.
